The Allergen Awareness course provides essential knowledge of food allergies and intolerances. From allergens and food legislation, to food safety management systems and types of cross contamination, you’ll be equipped with the information you need to be aware of allergens in your catering environment.

The course provides an insight into allergen awareness in bite-sized modules. Candidates will undertake an online multiple-choice assessment and will receive a certificate if successful (any certificates from an official awarding body are sent to you via email).

Course syllabus

Module 1: Safe Internet Usage
  • Course Introduction

    This unit provides an introduction to the Allergen Awareness course, outlining the course structure and explaining how the subsequent units explore key aspects of food allergies, intolerances, and allergen management.

  • Introduction to Food Allergies

    We begin by examining the scale and impact of food allergies and hypersensitivity. This unit also introduces the symptoms of food allergies, the concept of anaphylaxis, and the importance of awareness and preparedness.

  • Food Intolerances

    This unit explains the differences between food allergies and intolerances. You’ll learn about coeliac disease, common allergens, and hidden allergens, as well as practical ways to manage and identify them.

  • Legislation and Labelling Regulations

    Here, we explore current food legislation and how it is enforced. You’ll gain an understanding of ingredient labelling, allergen disclosure requirements, and the consequences of failing to comply with allergen management laws.

  • Safe Catering Environments

    The final unit focuses on maintaining a safe catering environment. Topics include food safety management systems, allergen ingredient recording, preventing cross-contamination, safe food preparation and storage, and checklists for various staff roles.

Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
