Course syllabus

Module 1: Essential IT Skills
  • Course Introduction

This unit provides an introduction to the Essential IT Skills course, outlining the course structure and how the rest of the units cover the course content.

  • Introduction to PCs & Laptops

To get the course underway, we begin by explaining the process of logging into a computer, and the importance of passwords and security. We then demonstrate how to control a computer using a mouse or trackpad, and a keyboard.

  • Apps & Programmes

In this section, we introduce you to programmes on a computer — also referred to as apps — and explain their role in performing everyday tasks.

  • Working with Files

In this section, we show you how to create a basic document on a computer and explain what toolbars and menus are within apps.

  • Looking After Your Files

Here we continue working with files by explaining how to manage and organise them effectively. We also introduce drag and drop functionality and demonstrate how to delete and recover files.

  • The Internet

No course on basic computer skills is complete without covering the internet. This part of the course prepares you to search and browse websites, including useful government websites such as 'Find a Job' and 'Universal Credit'.

  • Printing

Despite today’s digital world, printing remains an important aspect of computer usage, especially in business settings. This section covers how to print documents effectively.

  • Printing Options

In this optional module, we explore advanced printing options available in some apps. You’ll learn how to print specific pages, adjust page orientation, and print multiple pages on a single sheet.

  • Storage Methods

In this final module, we cover storage devices — essential tools for transferring data and keeping your work safe and accessible.

Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
