Overview
Our Level 2 Award An Introduction to First Aid for Mental Health qualification will increase your awareness of common mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression and stress, that can have an impact on our everyday lives. You'll also obtain knowledge on how a mental health first aider can provide immediate 'on the spot' care to others, while looking after their own mental wellbeing. Upon successful completion of the invigilated assessments, you will receive an official certificate. This qualification incorporates the Level 1 Award An Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing qualification.

Module 1: An Awareness of Mental Health
- Course Introduction
This unit provides an introduction to the Level 2 Award An Introduction to First Aid for Mental Health course. It outlines the course structure and explains how the following modules and units cover the course content.
- An Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing
We begin the course by defining what is meant by the terms 'mental health' and 'wellbeing', and introducing the concept of mental ill-health. The unit explores how mental ill-health impacts individuals and concludes with an explanation of the mental health continuum.
- Mental Health Issues
This unit looks at the signs and symptoms of mental health-related stress in the workplace, before moving on to examine eight common mental health issues and how they can present in daily life.
- Understanding Mental Health
Here we examine the roles of stress and eustress, and how mental health can both enhance and hinder performance. The unit introduces the concept of cognitive appraisal and explores how mental ill-health is diagnosed.
- Recovery and Resilience
This unit focuses on recovery and the five protective factors that support good mental health. It also explores practical strategies to manage personal mental health and build resilience to maintain wellbeing.
- Exam Preparation
In this final unit of Module 1, we explain the structure and format of the first multiple-choice exam, provide examination tips, and include a mock exam for practice.
Module 2: Mental Health First Aid

This unit introduces the second module, explaining how the upcoming units will build upon the first module and complete the course content.
- The Principles of Mental Health First Aid
We define what 'mental health first aid' means and outline the role, responsibilities, and boundaries of a mental health first aider. The unit also covers the importance of confidentiality and ethical conduct in this role.
- Mental Health Issues
This unit teaches how to recognise signs of poor mental health in others, explores the link between physical and mental health, and discusses mental health in the workplace, including effective conversations for managers and first aiders.
- The ABC Plan - First Aid Response
We introduce the ABC action plan, a structured approach to providing mental health first aid. This unit explains how to start supportive conversations, respond appropriately, and prepare for various first aid scenarios.
- The ABC Plan - Supporting and Creating a Plan
Continuing with the ABC plan, this unit focuses on the 'Be There' stage, covering non-judgemental listening, open-ended questioning, and empathy. It concludes with guidance on the 'Create a Plan' phase, helping individuals take practical next steps.
- Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace
This unit focuses on promoting mental health awareness in the workplace. It examines the role of mental health first aiders in fostering a supportive culture, managing workplace stress, and maintaining personal wellbeing while supporting others.
- Exam Preparation
In the final unit, we review the structure and format of the second multiple-choice exam, share helpful examination strategies, and provide a mock exam for practice.
Obtaining your certificate
You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
