Module 1: Introduction to Licensing

This unit provides an introduction to the Personal Licence Holder Level 2 Award course. It outlines the course structure and explains how the remaining modules and units cover the key aspects of licensing law and responsibilities.
- Setting the Scene
We begin the course by setting the scene with background information about licensing in England and Wales. This unit provides an overview of licensable activities, types of licensing, and associated restrictions and exemptions.
- Licensing in England and Wales
This unit examines the licensing system in England and Wales and explains how local authorities manage it. It also explores the four main licensable activities and provides insight into deregulated entertainment.
- Understanding Alcohol
In this final unit of Module 1, we explore various aspects of alcohol, including its definition, strength, units, labelling laws, and the risks associated with its consumption.
Module 2: Types of Licence
- Personal Licences
We start Module 2 by exploring Personal Licences, covering the duties and responsibilities of personal licence holders, eligibility requirements, the application process, and the circumstances under which a licence can be suspended.
- Premises Licences
This unit examines Premises Licences, including key facts, mandatory conditions, and the process for applying for and varying a premises licence. It also introduces the role of the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS).
- Club Premises Certificates
In this unit, we explore Club Premises Certificates, their qualifying criteria, associated regulations, and the process of applying for one, as well as the types of club activities covered.
- Temporary Events Notices
This unit covers Temporary Events Notices (TENs), explaining their purpose, the application process, relevant constraints, and how TENs operate in practice.
- Enforcing the Law
In the final unit of Module 2, we examine how the law is enforced. This includes the powers of authorised officers, enforcement actions, and procedures for closing establishments that breach licensing laws.
Module 3: The Licensing Objectives
- Prevention of Crime and Disorder
This unit explores the first licensing objective: the prevention of crime and disorder. Topics include preventative measures, managing incidents, responsible drinks promotions, and strategies for encouraging responsible drinking.
- Public Safety and the Prevention of Public Nuisance
Here, we examine two further licensing objectives: public safety and the prevention of public nuisance. The unit includes fire safety, health and safety responsibilities, and methods for reducing noise and disruption.
- The Protection of Children from Harm
In the final unit of Module 3, we focus on protecting children from harm. This includes the rules surrounding the admission of children to licensed premises, the sale of alcohol to minors, and the implementation of an age verification policy.
Module 4: Preparation for your Exam
- Preparation for your Exam
This final module prepares learners for their end-of-course multiple-choice assessment. It explains the exam format, provides revision tips, and recaps key areas of the course. A practice exam is also included to help reinforce learning.
Obtaining your certificate
You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
