The course provides an exploration into some of Microsoft Word’s more advanced functions in bite-sized modules which contain narrated slides and demonstration videos to take you through the content in a simple manner. Candidates will undertake an online multiple-choice assessment and will receive a certificate if successful (any certificates from an official awarding body are sent to you via email).

    This unit provides an introduction to the Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders course. It outlines the structure of the course and explains how the remaining modules and units cover the required content.

  • Overview of the Licensing Function

    We begin with an overview of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, defining what is meant by 'alcohol' and examining the five key licensing objectives that underpin the Act.

  • Key Roles

    In this unit, we examine the key roles and responsibilities within the licensing framework, including those of Licensing Boards, Local Licensing Forums, Licensing Standards Officers, and Premises Managers.

Module 2: Types of Licences, Control of Order and Associated Laws
  • Premises Licences Part 1

    This unit introduces the three types of licences, focusing on Premises Licences. It explains how these are processed and explores risk assessments and best practice policies.

  • Premises Licences Part 2

    We continue our exploration of premises licences by looking at reasons for refusal, the variation and transfer process, and specific exceptions that apply to clubs.

  • Duties and Mandatory Conditions Part 1

    This section examines the duties of personal licence holders and outlines the various mandatory conditions that apply to licensed premises.

  • Duties and Mandatory Conditions Part 2

    We now turn our attention to licensed hours and minimum pricing, as well as exploring the issue of irresponsible drinks promotions and their restrictions.

  • Personal and Occasional Licences

    Here, we explore the processes for issuing and renewing Personal Licences, as well as applying for Occasional Licences, highlighting key legal and procedural requirements.

  • Control of Order and Associated Laws Part 1

    This unit examines how the law is enforced, including police powers, licence reviews, and the implications of endorsements and exclusion orders on personal and premises licences.

  • Control of Order and Associated Laws Part 2

    In this final unit of Module 2, we review associated laws relevant to licensing, such as those concerning smoking and gambling, along with related offences and penalties.

Module 3: Understanding Alcohol and Responsible Retailing
  • Alcohol and its Effects

    This unit explores alcohol’s strength, units, and effects on the body, both short and long-term. It also examines the consequences of excessive drinking and issues surrounding drunkenness.

  • Social Responsibility

    We focus on maintaining best practice and responsible standards on licensed premises, including delivering good customer service and fostering a culture of social responsibility.

  • Selling Alcohol to Children and Young People

    This section covers the legal and ethical considerations of selling alcohol to minors, including the Proof of Age Standards Scheme, Challenge 25, test purchasing, best practice, and due diligence.

Module 4: Exam Preparation
  • Preparation for your Exam

    This unit outlines the exam format and provides key preparation tips to help you succeed in your multiple-choice assessment.

  • Revision 1

    We review key topics including the Licensing (Scotland) Act’s definition of alcohol, the five licensing objectives, what constitutes a 'sale' of alcohol, and the roles of licensing authorities.

  • Revision 2

    This unit revisits the different types of licences, focusing on premises licences and their variations, application processes, and licence transfers.

  • Revision 3

    Here, we review personal and occasional licences, duties and mandatory conditions, and the legal responsibilities of those managing licensed premises.

  • Revision 4

    The final revision unit focuses on the consequences of excessive drinking, best practices for responsible operations, zero-tolerance drugs policies, and underage alcohol sales and consumption.

Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
