This Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course provides essential life-saving skills for appointed first aiders in low-risk workplaces such as offices, retail, schools and hospitality. It covers how to respond confidently to common workplace emergencies while meeting the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and UK legal requirements.

Course syllabus
Module 1: Emergency Response
- First aider role and responsibilities
Understand the duties, scope and responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including legal considerations and reporting.
- Scene assessment and safety
Assess an incident scene, identify hazards and make the area safe before providing first aid.
- Contacting emergency services
Know when and how to call 999/112 and what key information to provide to get appropriate help quickly.
- Primary survey (DR ABC)
Use the DR ABC approach to check responsiveness, airway, breathing and circulation and prioritise treatment.
Module 2: CPR & AED
- Adult CPR
Perform adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation in line with current guidelines.
- Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Operate an AED safely and effectively during a cardiac arrest in the workplace.
- When to start and stop CPR
Recognise when CPR is required, when it should be continued and when it can be stopped.
- Managing CPR difficulties
Identify and deal with common problems and complications encountered while performing CPR.
Module 3: Recovery Position
- Placing a casualty in the recovery position
Place a breathing, unresponsive casualty into the recovery position safely.
- Ongoing monitoring
Carry out regular checks on breathing and responsiveness while waiting for further help.
Module 4: Wound Care
- Controlling bleeding
Control external bleeding using pressure and dressings to minimise blood loss.
- Treating minor injuries
Provide first aid for minor cuts, grazes, bruises, burns, scalds and small splinters.
- Bandaging skills
Apply simple bandages correctly to support and protect injured areas.
Module 5: Medical Emergencies & Choking
- Heart attack and stroke
Recognise the signs and symptoms of heart attacks and strokes and give appropriate first aid while awaiting emergency help.
- Seizures and other medical conditions
Respond safely to seizures and a range of common medical emergencies.
- Managing choking
Identify partial and complete airway obstruction and apply the correct first aid procedures.
Module 6: Shock and Fainting
- Recognising shock and fainting
Spot the main signs and symptoms of shock and fainting in adults.
- Providing immediate support
Give appropriate first aid and reassurance to casualties experiencing shock or fainting episodes.
Obtaining your certificate
On successful completion of the one-day course and assessments, delegates receive a recognised Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, valid for 3 years and accepted nationwide.
Assessment
Assessment is through practical observation of first aid skills and multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
